Clean a bicycle drivetrain by removing loose dirt, using a compatible cleaner and brush, rinsing with low pressure only when allowed, drying completely, and applying the correct lubricant. Protect all brake friction surfaces throughout the process.
Prepare the area
Support the bicycle securely. Keep cleaner and dirty runoff away from brake rotors, pads, rim braking tracks, tires, and sensitive electrical parts. Follow environmental disposal guidance for solvents and oily waste.
Remove contamination
Brush loose mud away first. Apply the cleaner as its instructions specify, then work it through chainring teeth, chain rollers, cassette spaces, and pulley wheels. Avoid aggressive scraping that can damage finishes or seals.
Rinse and dry
Use a damp cloth or gentle water flow only where component guidance permits. Never pressure-wash bearings, suspension, motors, or electrical interfaces. Dry the drivetrain and inspect for stiff links, wear, or damage that dirt had hidden.
Lubricate and wipe
Apply bicycle chain lubricant to the rollers, allow its specified setting time, and wipe the exterior dry. Cleaning is also the right time to measure chain wear and review the drivetrain maintenance routine.
