A step-by-step diagnostic order
Working in order matters because the cheap, common causes sit at the top, and each step rules out a category so you are not chasing several possibilities at once. Do not skip ahead to derailleur screws before you have cleaned the chain.

Index the gears
If noise appears in specific gears, adjust the rear derailleur indexing. In a stand, shift to a middle gear and pedal. - Freehub and rear hub. A tick or click while coasting, when you are not pedaling, is not the chain. The freehub ratchet clicks by design; an irregular tick can be a hub issue.
