Pre-ride

Bike Check Before a Long Ride

Before a long bike ride, check tires, wheels, brakes, drivetrain, controls, spares, lights, fit contact points, and unresolved service issues.

A cyclist checking tires and controls before a longer ride

Complete a long-ride bike check several days before departure so there is time for parts or service. Inspect tires, wheels, brakes, drivetrain, controls, contact points, lights, and the repair kit, then take a short local confirmation ride after any work.

Several days before

  • Inspect tire tread, sidewalls, pressure behavior, and sealant or tube condition.
  • Check wheel security, spoke condition, and obvious rim damage.
  • Test both brakes and inspect pads and braking surfaces.
  • Measure chain wear and investigate skipping or poor shifting.
  • Confirm handlebar, saddle, pedals, racks, and bottles are secure.
  • Charge lights, navigation, phone, and e-bike systems.

Match spares to the bike

Carry compatible tubes or repair supplies, inflation equipment, tire levers, a suitable multitool, identification, and route-appropriate essentials. Tubeless riders should still have a backup plan for damage sealant cannot repair.

Avoid last-minute major changes

New fit positions, tires, saddles, and major service deserve a local test before a remote route. Do not start with an unresolved brake, tire, steering, wheel, structural, or battery concern. Use the two-minute pre-ride check again on departure morning.
