Pre-Ride Bike Check: A Two-Minute Routine

Use this quick pre-ride bike check for tires, wheels, brakes, chain, steering, controls, lights, and secure e-bike battery mounting.

Before each ride, check the parts that keep the bicycle rolling, steering, and stopping: tires, wheel security, both brakes, steering, controls, and the drivetrain. Add lights and battery security when relevant.

Tires and wheels

Look for low pressure, cuts, bulges, exposed casing, or a tire that is not seated evenly. Confirm both wheels are secure using the axle system’s instructions. Spin each wheel briefly and investigate a major wobble or heavy rub.

Brakes

Apply each brake separately while stationary. Levers should become firm before reaching the handlebar, and braking should feel predictable. Check that pads are not touching the tire.

Steering and contact points

Make sure the handlebar, stem, saddle, and controls do not shift unexpectedly. Check that steering moves smoothly without obvious looseness.

Drivetrain, lights, and e-bike systems

Look for a damaged chain, obvious derailleur problem, or loose cable. Confirm required lights work. On an e-bike, check that the battery is latched and the display shows no unresolved warning.

Do not ride with a failed high-risk item. Use our full bicycle inspection checklist for a deeper review.
