Bike brakes can squeal because the braking surface is wet, dirty, contaminated, glazed, worn, or poorly aligned. If braking power feels weak, the lever reaches the handlebar, or the sound began after lubricant reached the brake, stop riding and have the brake inspected.
Start with braking performance
Noise matters, but stopping power matters more. In a safe stationary position, apply each brake separately. The lever should become firm before touching the handlebar, and the wheel should be held securely. Do not perform a road test if either brake feels weak or inconsistent.
Common causes
- Water: brief noise in rain can disappear as the braking surface dries.
- Contamination: oil, polish, or chain lubricant can reduce friction and ruin pads.
- Glazing: excess heat can leave the pad surface smooth and noisy.
- Alignment: a pad or caliper that meets the braking surface unevenly can vibrate.
- Wear: thin pads or damaged braking surfaces need service, not more adjustment.
Safe checks you can make
Use clean hands and avoid touching disc rotors or pad friction surfaces. Look through the caliper for remaining pad material, inspect the rotor for obvious damage, and confirm the wheel is seated securely. Rim-brake riders should check that the pads contact only the rim’s braking track—not the tire.
Do not spray cleaners at an assembled brake unless the brake or cleaner manufacturer explicitly allows it. Never apply lubricant to silence a brake.
When a mechanic should take over
